I'm using a carbide insert chopping device, pretty moderate cutting pace, and no coolant. The first step is to chop the end of the bar stock so it is sq. to the length. This offers a pleasant clear, clean surface for drilling. Decide how long you need the bar to be, then add maybe a mm or two and minimize it off.
